Inspiration For The Film

An abode – so mighty, silent and strong,
It stood the test of time all along.
Generations of families and businesses were nourished,
The ancient Waada saw them all flourish!
One fine day, it was time to bid adieu,
To the beloved house, whose each corner everyone knew.
The rooms were tiny, but the people grew closer,
Their love was abundant, and they did it all together!
With the passage of time, they had countless anecdotes to sketch,
For the Waada was more than just a house.
It was “home” to many, where countless memories were etched!

If you have lived in Pune, you have either seen one, admired one or if you were fortunate enough, stayed in one! A first-hand experience of having spent the crucial, growing up years in a cultural Waada was our inspiration behind making this short film.

The Concept

As our cities swell, the age-old Waadas are slowly making way for modern apartments. We wanted to capture the essence of this traditional style of homes that is imbibed in Pune’s culture, for posterity.

Surprisingly, penning down the lines for such a complex mix of thoughts and emotions was much less complicated. The lines simply flowed as they came straight from the heart. In just a couple of hours, we had our script for the short film in place!

The Visuals

“Gokhale Waada“, situated at the prime Karve Road area of Pune was going to be the location for the shoot. When you are acquainted with every nook and cranny of a certain place, there are countless memories associated with it. The visuals weren’t exactly planned line-by-line, but we knew exactly all that we wanted to capture – and that made our job much easier. The intertwined wires were symbolic of the many lives that were harmoniously living together.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The old billing system was reminiscent of traditions that were followed and

relations that were nurtured with equal care. If you notice, the story doesn’t depict a human character, and yet the many visuals of people’s keepsakes manage to breathe life into the film. Some of the old walls were freshly painted; new locks hung on old doors. There was a place for the new to grow, and for the existing to grow old. In short, we always had plenty of things to capture, and the visuals fell into place as seamlessly as the lines for the script did![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Post Production

Throughout the making of Waada, we realised how the film went beyond simply capturing the essence of the style of housing. The reactions it evoked from the artists

who contributed to its music and voiceover were nothing short of overwhelming. On one occasion, we had to pause the recording for a few minutes because our voiceover artist had tears in his eyes. The emotional ride that was Waadashowed us that the underlying sentiment behind making the Marathi short film, though personal, resonated with everyone, irrespective of whether or not they had experienced staying in one of these houses. We believe that it is the highest token of appreciation, a satisfaction that no award can give.

Family Viewing

The joint-Gokhale family had the privilege of having the first look at the finished short film. The experience was beyond words. Moving out of your home, though a natural transition, is never an easy process. The film was our ode to the place that had a piece of everyone’s heart. It was our way of ensuring that no matter where the families moved on to and planted their roots next, GokhaleWaada would continue to live on through the film.

Preserving The Memories

For most of us, the places where we grew up became a big part in shaping our lives. For us, the mighty Waada stood tall through life and death, success and failure. What was a personal experience for one family, turned out to be much larger in terms of its reach and how people connected with the sense of culture, tradition and families living together!

Waada was nominated in various film festivals in the category of best short film in 2020. It also went on to win accolades at a prestigious short film festival, which simply encouraged us to continue pouring passion into what we do at Creative Splash.
